Take Your Movies And Music To The Next Level
Infinity's original Modulus, a compact home theater audio system with outstanding performance, set a new benchmark for cinematic realism and musical subtlety. Now, combining acclaimed technologies, superior materials, and strikingly simple design, comes Modulus II. Rendering vividly accurate, detailed sound ideally suited to the reproduction of movies and music from digital sources, the newest Modulus delivers an unheard of level of enjoyment in any listening environment. Each of the four satellite speakers has a 4.00" midrange and a 0.75" tweeter, while the center channel speaker has dual 4.00" midranges and a 0.75" tweeter. The bass is presented through a 12.00" powered subwoofer, specifically tuned to the physical dimensions of your listening room by proprietary RABOS technology; and all of the drivers in this package incorporate Infinity's patented CMMD transducer material. Achieve brilliantly transparent high frequencies and stunningly dynamic bass for your home theater--choose Modulus II.
CMMD Technology Silences Resonances
Infinity's goal is to eliminate resonances, unwanted colorations, or distortions, of the sound reproduced by a speaker. Every transducer has its own unavoidable set of resonances based on its own physical characteristics. The trick is to build a transducer where the natural resonances are either above or below its audible range. To accomplish this, Infinity engineers invented and patented Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragm (CMMD) transducer material, a sandwich made up of layers of ceramic alumina (20% of the total thickness top and bottom) anodized to a metallic aluminum core (the remaining 60% of total thickness). Among the stiffest materials known, alumina and aluminum were chosen because sound moves through them faster than through conventional transducer materials and the CMMD sandwich responds to electrical signals very rapidly without coloring the sound at all. That's why every transducer in Modulus II speakers incorporates CMMD technology. Remember that Infinity's CMMD technology is patented (nos. 6,327,372 and 6,404,897), so when other manufacturers claim that their transducers are ceramically coated, it's merely a cosmetic surface treatment. Modulus II transducers are made with 20/60/20% alumina-aluminum sandwich material first and foremost for the sound, not just the look.
RABOS Tames The Room
The sound we hear at low frequencies is determined as much or more by the listening room than by the loudspeaker itself. The positioning of the speakers and the listeners, and the acoustical characteristics of the room surfaces all figure into bass quantity and quality. Except for trial-and-error repositioning of loudspeakers and listeners, there's not much that can be done about the room's physical characteristics short of massive acoustical treatment, which would be both impractical and expensive. Equalization is the only practical answer. Infinity's Room Adaptive Bass Optimization System (RABOS) uses a single band of parametric equalization to identify the listening room's most dominant low frequency response, or peak. A bass peak exaggerates the sounds at its frequency, making the bass performance sloppy or boomy. Reducing the level of the peak produces a deeper, more detailed bass. A RABOS kit--included in every Modulus package--provides a sophisticated, yet simple-to-understand, calibration procedure that allows you to adjust the Modulus II subwoofer's built-in parametric equalizing filter for the dominant low-frequency response characteristic of any room, the same way professional sound engineers do it. With the kit comes a test CD, a low-frequency sound-level meter, a "Q-Finder" to determine the bandwidth of the measured curve, and finally, a measurement template. Here's how it works: You play a series of reference tones from the test CD and record--on the measurement template--the relative output levels (using the sound-level meter) at different locations in the room. After taking the measurements, the template produces a response curve for frequencies below 100 Hz. Then you locate the largest bass peak frequency, calculate the correct attenuation, and use the Q-Finder to find the bandwidth of the curve. These are the values that are dialed into the Bass Optimization Controls on the Modulus II subwoofer. You may also log on to the RABOS Online Calculator web site, input your measurements, and have the adjustment values calculated for you. With Modulus and RABOS, the room no longer controls the sound of the bass--you do.
Chic, Stylish Design
These Modulus II speakers are chic, stylish, and aerodynamic-looking; and even though they're designed with the same flair as a piece of fine art, Infinity's cabinets must first and foremost be resonance-free. Ideally, the only sound radiating from a loudspeaker system would come from the transducers themselves; but in practice, speaker enclosures resonate the sound as well. Infinity engineers use data from a scanning laser vibrometer to anaylze cabinet resonances and design effective bracing to neutralize them. The only sound you will hear from a Modulus II speaker comes from drivers, not the enclosure.
Infinity Assures Superb Performance and Superior Quality
Motion pictures and music are art. Reproducing that art is science, and science is quantifiable. Before ever designing a speaker, Infinity's engineers make and analyze a number of critical objective and subjective measurements. Objectively, they measure frequency response, spatial averages, phase response, and nonlinear distortion to analyze technical accuracy, sensitivity, and power handling. Subjectively, they measure sound quality (timbre and bandwidth), spatial quality (how well the speakers spread out the sound), stereo imaging, the multichannel soundstage (how strong is the sound imaging in front, behind, and to the sides), and dynamic capabilities (sound quality for very loud or very quiet inputs) to see if the engineering efforts have been successful. The Infinity Modulus II speakers you bring into your home have been subjected to some of the most rigorous testing in the industry--both before and after production--all to assure you superb performance and superior quality.
The Next Generation Of Home Theater Audio
Infinity strives for loudspeaker systems that are a window into the art--a clear window. Infinity wants speakers that don't editorialize, don't alter the sound, don't impart their own personality. The personality should rest in the art, not in the speakers. Good sound is something that, when we hear it, suspends belief. We believe we are at a live performance or listening to a motion picture theater's state-of-the-art sound system. The science of superlative sound and the art of singular styling come together in an innovative system that will transport you to a new level of listening delight. Compact enough for the smallest rooms, but able to captivate even in an imposing area, Modulus II represents the next generation of home theater audio. Pure, realistic sound to please discriminating ears in a package that's also a feast for the eyes--Infinity Modulus II.
