B&K Sonata ST-202+ (ST-202 plus) 200wpc stereo
power amplifier
B&K ST-202+ (ST-202 plus) Sonata power amplifier. Rated @ 200
watts-per-channel (8 ohms), 300 watts-per-channel (4 ohms). This is the
later Sonata series which sports the blue and red letterings on the faceplate;
the older one (non-Sonata series) has the gold letterings.
It is easy to understand why the original B&K ST-140 (105 wpc) power amp garnered so
much praise after listening to the ST-202+ Sonata (which I believe is probably
the last of that lineage). The ST-140 is a solid state amplifier which some
tube-like hint in the midrange and this trait exists in the various
iteration. The ST-202+ Sonata series is a more powerful version of the
original ST-140 which great sounding but more restricted in the range of speakers
it can drive comfortably. Before you think the ST-202+ can drive all type
of speakers, it is NO Krell. It will drive a wider range of typical
speakers well (not overly insensitive speakers whose resistance could dip
crazily like Dayton Wright electrostats etc). I did powered my
(inefficient 83db) Celestion SL-600's with them and they performed admirably. Exuded some really sweet midrange with good
highs and decent bass (the SL-600's are very limited in bass). IEC jack on
the rear allows better quality power cords to be used if you choose to do so
(std power cord comes with the unit).
Previous owner changed the pilot light in the unit to a (funky?) revolving
light. So you see the pilot light go from initial red, to blue, to purple,
to green etc. I am not sure if there were any mods done to the amp.
I had my tech replace one of the loose fuse holders (they don't match exactly
but it is not really that obvious, plus it is in the rear of the unit).
Electrically in excellent condition. Unit's cosmetics are better than very
good. There are some minor nicks on the top edge of the face plate which
has been (for the most part) concealed so they are not easily noticeable.
Front looks excellent (and so does other areas except the mentioned). One
of the classic over-achiever in my personal opinion, especially considering its
capability from the price stand point, one could spend a whole lot more and not
get more. Made in the USA.
