This Adcom GFA7500 was traded in. It’s in
VERY nice shape. The front looks GREAT, the sides look GREAT, and the top has
just a few small scratches. I’m fussy. You will probably be VERY happy when you
unpack it.
GFA7500s were built in the US, as
all of the best Adcom amps were, and is built like a tank.
We have the owner’s manual, but not the
box. To ensure it gets to its new owner in the fantastic shape it’s in now, we
will be giving it to our trusted expert to pack it for safe shipment.
This beast of an amp weighs nearly 60
pounds packed. In power amps, heavier is usually better!
First the basics: The GFA7500 is a
Five-channel Power Amplifier. It pumps out, conservatively, 150 Watts per channel
into 8-Ohms. It’s rated at 225 Watts per channel into 4-Ohm speakers.
The GFA7500 is also THX rated for high
performance.
The signal to noise ratio is rated at
-115dB, which means that if you hear noise in your system it did not come from
this amplifier.
This amp has enough power to drive almost
any speaker. The power rating covers the entire hearing range, 20-20,000Hz.
This amplifier uses an individual module
with its own power supply capacitors for each channel so there will be no
interference, and each channel can pull lots of power.
Unlike home theater RECEIVER’s power amp
stages, which are designed to be compact, his amp has multiple sets of
transistors in each channel. This has several advantages.
1) Each
one only carries a tiny fraction of the load and is never stressed.
2) Each
one only carries a tiny fraction of the current, so they run cooler.
3) Since
there are multiple transistors in parallel, the output impedance of the amp
goes WAY DOWN and the DAMPING FACTOR goes WAY UP. Damping helps some speakers
with a little “boominess” in the bass get tighter control on themselves. This amp
has a damping factor of over 800. Amazing!
4) With
so little stress on the transistors, the amount of current that the amplifier
can deliver into low impedances is very, very high. If you have speakers that
dip to low impedances, this is your amp.
Each channel of the amp has its own
circuit board, with a HUGE heatsink to keep the transistors cool.
There are lights on the front of the amp
to alert you when the amp reaches full power. That would be very loud, indeed.
There are also over-temperature lights,
though I have never seen these ever trigger on any ADCOM amplifier, unless it
had a short in the speaker lines!
The input jacks are of high quality, and
the speaker terminals are also very sturdy.
There is also a TRIGGER jack on the rear
panel. With a small data cable (NOT INCLUDED) connected between this jack and
the appropriate jack on your processor, your amp will go on and off with your
system automatically.
ADCOM Sound: ADCOM amps tend to have a warm
sound, much like a tube amp. This GFA7500 is no exception, except that it is
combined with high reserve power and current, too… great combination. The bass,
in particular, is very deep and tight. This, again, is due to the use of so
many output transistors.
When new, this made-in-the-USA GFA7500
sold for well over $1000 (I believe it was $1500) and was a great value.
